High Commissioner of India to Bangladesh calls on Governor
Guwahati, September 9: Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Vikram Doraiswami met Assam Governor Prof. Jagdish Mukhi at Raj Bhavan today and discussed with him on several issues.
This is the first visit of the High Commissioner after taking over his charge as the High Commissioner of India to Bangladesh. They discussed about the current status of bilateral relationship and development initiatives including trade, commerce etc. The High commissioner briefed the Governor about the major projects that are being taken up by India to strengthen the overall bilateral relationship particularly communication, trade, commerce and more people-to-people contacts.
It may be noted that with regard to communication some ongoing projects with special focus on railways, road connectivity, waterways connectivity, access to North East India and projects related to power sector were discussed.
The Governor also fondly recollected to the High Commissioner about his interaction with the President of Bangladesh and the High Commissioner of Bangladesh to India. Governor informed about his interaction with various senior functionaries and representatives from Bangladesh during India Bangladesh stakeholder meeting organised by the Industries and Commerce Dept., Govt.of Assam in 2019 and later on another programme organised by India Foundation.
Prof. Mukhi expressed his happiness on the present Indo-Bangla bilateral relations which is primarily based on mutual trust and cooperation between the two countries. He also said that Assam will play a more important role in strengthening this tie. In this regard, the High Commissioner said that there is a need for greater communication linkages between India and Bangladesh with special emphasis on North East.
The Governor also said that education is an important sector where both can work more collaboratively. He requested the High Commissioner to lay more emphasis on student exchange and cultural exchange programmes. Governor also requested to focus on special digital connectivity and bandwith facilities for North Eastern Indian states and link up with the Internet Gateway at Cox Bazar.
The Governor also said that Government of Assam is keen to contribute significantly to the growing partnership and cooperation between India and Bangladesh in trade, connectivity etc. as identified during the recent visit of the Hon’ble Prime Minister of India to Bangladesh. He said that in doing so people on both sides of the border will reap the benefits of accelerated socio-economic progress.
Prof. Mukhi appreciated the initiative of the High Commissioner for visiting Assam and consulting key stake holders here. Regional Passport Offier, Guwahati Cherakung Zeliang also accompanied the High Commissioner during the visit.
