Karbi Anglong rises in one voice for a Drug-Free Assam as Governor leads Nasha Mukt Bharat Sankalp Padayatra in Diphu
Guwahati,Rongili Barta: A powerful message of collective resolve against drug abuse reverberated through Diphu today as Governor of Assam Shri Lakshman Prasad Acharya led the Nasha Mukt Bharat Sankalp Padayatra, bringing together hundreds of students, NCC and NSS cadets, social organisations, ex-servicemen, civil society representatives, government officials and citizens in a united call for a healthier and drug-free society.
It may be noted that Karbi Anglong is the seventh district visited by the Governor under the Nasha Mukt Bharat Sankalp initiative, further strengthening the people-centric campaign to build awareness against drug abuse and inspire communities across Assam to take sustained action.
Addressing the assembly of enthusiastic people at Diphu Town Hall, the Governor said that the historic land of Karbi Anglong, renowned for its rich tribal traditions, natural beauty and spirit of social unity, has always nurtured a strong sense of responsibility towards society and the nation.
Recalling the contribution of the people of Karbi Anglong to Assam’s history and the freedom movement, Shri Acharya paid tribute to freedom fighters from the region, including Semsonsing Ingti and Nongjirang Lekthe, whose courage and sacrifice continue to inspire generations.
He said that the freedom fighters had envisioned a strong nation and a value-based younger generation, and that the responsibility of fulfilling that vision rests on society.
The Governor said that the national resolve for a drug-free society is closely linked with the vision of Viksit Bharat@2047, as a developed nation requires not only economic growth and modern infrastructure but also healthy, capable, educated and responsible citizens.
Referring to the call given by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to the youth to stay away from drugs and embrace a healthy lifestyle, Governor Shri Acharya said that the strength of the nation lies in its youth and that their energy must be channelled towards education, skill development, sports, innovation and nation-building.
He expressed appreciation for the overwhelming participation of the people of Karbi Anglong, saying that the large public presence, demonstrated the district’s determination to confront the challenge of drug abuse collectively.
The Governor reiterated that the creation of a drug-free society cannot be achieved through government action alone. Families, educational institutions, community and social organisations, religious institutions, the administration and, most importantly, young people must work together to make awareness against drug abuse a sustained people’s movement.
After his address, Governor Shri Acharya flagged off the Nasha Mukt Bharat Sankalp Padayatra from Diphu Town Hall to the District Commissioner’s Office and walked alongside hundreds of participants. The vibrant participation of students, NCC and NSS cadets, social organisations, officials and citizens reflected a shared commitment to the cause.
On reaching the culminating point of the Padyatra, the Governor paid floral tributes to Mahatma Gandhi recalling his enduring values of self-discipline, truth and social responsibility associated with his life and ideals.
District Commissioner, Karbi Anglong, Kriti Chachra administered the Nasha Mukt Bharat Sankalp pledge to the participants, who collectively reaffirmed their commitment to creating a society free from drug abuse.
The Governor called upon the people to ensure that the resolve against drugs extends beyond a single programme and becomes a continuous movement across villages, schools, colleges, workplaces and neighbourhoods.
He expressed confidence that the message emerging from Karbi Anglong would resonate across hills, valleys and plains and inspire young people to make healthy choices and contribute positively to society and the nation.
The programme was attended by Deputy Speaker of the Assam Legislative Assembly Dr. Habbi Teron; Chairman of the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council Raju Tisso, MLA Niso Terangpi, District Commissioner Karbi Anglong Kriti Chachra, SSP Pushpraj Singh, Principal Secretary of the Council Dilip Terang, representatives of various social organisations and other dignitaries.
