Governor reviews Flood Relief Operations of Indian Red Cross Society, Assam
Guwahati,Rongili Barta: Assam Governor and President of the Indian Red Cross Society (IRCS), Assam State Branch, Shri Lakshman Prasad Acharya, today chaired a high-level review meeting with the office-bearers of the Indian Red Cross Society, Assam State Branch, at Lok Bhavan to assess the ongoing humanitarian response and relief measures for flood-affected people across the State.
The meeting was attended by the General Secretary of the IRCS, Assam State Branch, Deba Prasad Mishra, along with other senior functionaries, who briefed the Governor on the extensive relief and rehabilitation initiatives undertaken in response to the current wave of floods, particularly in the districts of Upper Assam.
The delegation informed the Governor that the Indian Red Cross Society has activated its District Branches in the affected areas and mobilised trained volunteers to provide timely humanitarian assistance. They highlighted the rapid needs assessment being carried out on the ground and the close coordination being maintained with the respective District Administrations, the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), and the National Headquarters of the Indian Red Cross Society to ensure an effective and coordinated response.
The Governor was also apprised of the challenges faced in delivering essential relief services, including emergency shelter, household relief materials, safe drinking water, healthcare, first aid, and Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) support to flood-affected communities.
Stressing the need for a robust and proactive response, Governor Shri Acharya urged the Indian Red Cross Society to further streamline its emergency response mechanism to ensure that relief reaches every affected person in a timely manner. He also stressed the importance of taking preventive measures to address the possible outbreak of water-borne and vector-borne diseases following the recession of floodwaters.
Appreciating the commitment and selfless service of the Indian Red Cross Society and its volunteers, the Governor assured them of his full support in strengthening the organisation’s humanitarian efforts. He further stated that any assistance required from the Central Government would be pursued through the appropriate channels to facilitate timely relief and rehabilitation for the flood-affected population.
The meeting was also attended by Joint Secretary to the Governor Arindam Barua, PPS to the Governor Dr. S. N. Bhowmick, and other members of the Indian Red Cross Society, Assam State Branch.
