Assam Governor Presents Award of Excellence to meritorious students

Educational institutions should serve as a catalyst to implement NEP 2020: Governor

Guwahati, Rongili Barta- In a bid to encourage and promote excellence in education, Assam Governor Prof. Jagdish Mukhi presented Assam Governor’s Award for Excellence -2022 to Anisha Chakraborty, First Class First position in B.Com, Narsima Ahmed First Class Second Position in BBA, Sushmita Deka, First Class First in M.Com and Ajit Kumar First Class First in MBA  at a function held at the premises of Gauhati Commerce College here today.

It may be noted that the award was instituted by the Governor Prof.Jagdish Mukhi to give recognition to brilliant minds. For this purpose a grant of Rs.10,000,00 (ten lakhs) from the Governor’s discretionary fund was created for six educational institutions including Gauhati Commerce College which has been parked in a fixed deposit account and the annual interest accruing from the same is being utilized for Gold Medal being given to the meritorious students of undergraduate and post graduate level.  The award aims at encouraging higher education, acknowledging success, appreciating efforts of the student and also to motivate and encourage other students to come up and show their zeal.

Speaking on the occasion, Governor Prof. Mukhi said that an institution in known by the quality of its students as Gauhati Commerce College has been able to leave an indelible mark on the life and society of North -East India with its committed services.  He further said that the study of commerce in North-East India has direct and immediate connection with Gauhati Commerce College. Beginning its journey in the year 1962, the college has steadily grown over the decades. Besides, producing several stalwarts in the fields of business, academics, banking and financial services, this college has earned its reputation in producing chartered accountants, lawyers, entrepreneurs, company secretaries and many more who are serving the nation with name and fame, the Governor added.

Prof. Mukhi moreover said that the performance of Gauhati Commerce College has influenced the achievement of students in securing outstanding results. He, therefore, congratulated the college management on its excellent performance in churning the human resources and creating a knowledge based society. Considering the immense role of the college in shaping the young minds towards commerce studies, he stated that the decision was taken to bring Gauhati Commerce College in a group of six colleges for instituting Governor’s Awards of Excellence in the Undergraduate and Post graduate category.

Quoting Swami Vivekananda who said, “We want that education by which character is formed, strength of mind is increased, the intellect is expanded and by which one can stand on one’s own feet”, the Governor advocated for a system of education which stresses that the overall personality of an individual is nurtured and groomed. He, therefore, said that the National Education Policy which marks the departure from the colonial tradition and buoys the aspirations of New and Resilient India hinges on the overall personality development of the students. He also asked the Gauhati Commerce College to take a lead in implementing NEP 2020 and become a podium to help the students to fulfill their aspirations. The Governor also said that though this award is implemented currently in six educational institutes only, he would take the lead to include more educational institutions within the ambit of the award. He also appealed to the students to be committed and focused and pursue their studies and earn laurels for themselves, for their parents, for their institutions and for their nation.

President of the Governing body Dr.Bhupati Kumar Das, Principal Gauhati Commerce College Dr.Homeshwar Kalita and host of other dignitaries were present on the occasion.
