Assam Governor attends an all India seminar

Guwahati, Rongili Barta- Assam Governor Gulab Chand Kataria said that engineers play a vital role in developing sustainable solutions, innovative technologies, and designing resilient infrastructure to combat the impact of climate change. Inaugurating a seminar on the role of Mechanical Engineers in mitigating climate change here in the Institution of Engineers (India), Assam Chapter, Governor Kataria said that the engineers can play an important role in addressing the climate challenges, both in mitigating the emission of greenhouse gases, as well as in enhancing the process of resilience and adaptation to climate change impacts. The engineers can play a crucial role in developing effective and cost-competitive measures for reducing the ills of climate change.The Governor also said that the engineers should adopt a multi-disciplinary efforts that is by aligning with other stakeholders like bureaucrats, policy planners, policy executors to develop ways and means for addressing the impact efforts of mitigating the impact of climate change. Referring to “Mission Life” which is a flagship programme to promote sustainable lifestyle, the Governor said that the mission encourages sustainable lifestyles and sustainable patterns of consumption to address the challenges of climate change. Speaking on the long term impact of climate change the Governor said that climate change has impacted rise in temperature. Climate change alters many of earth’s natural processes and causes widespread issues such as rising sea levels, melting ice caps, extreme weather conditions, and increased pollution. These phenomena have a significant impact on humans because they can lead to displacement of human settlement, food insecurity, increased risk of respiratory illnesses so on and so forth.The Governor however, said that the effects of climate change can be reduced by being less dependent on fossil fuels. He said that increasing use of renewable energy sources like solar, wind, geothermal hydropower etc should be promoted. Chairman of Institution of Engineers (India) Dr. N.N. Patwary, Assam State Centre Director Operations of Oil India Limited Pankaj Kumar Goswami, Professor of Mechanical Engineering of Jadavpur University, Kolkata Prof. Sudipta De, Honorary Secretary of IEI Assam State Centre Pulak Sarma, Organizing Secretary of the All India Seminar Mahesh Barkataki, Corporate Members, students and teachers of various institutions were also present in the inaugural function of the seminar.
