Nasha Mukt Bharat Sankalp Padayatra continues its awareness drive in Dibrugarh
Governor calls for collective action to protect youth from substance abuse
Guwahati,Rongili Barta: Assam Governor Shri Lakshman Prasad Acharya today led the third leg of the Nasha Mukt Bharat Sankalp Padayatra in Dibrugarh, following its launch in Cachar and Sribhumi last week. He called for sustained public awareness and collective action to protect the youth from substance abuse and build a drug-free society.
Addressing an assembly of people gathered for the Padyatra at the District Library, Dibrugarh, the Governor said the Padayatra is aimed at taking the message of a drug-free society to every section of society across Assam. He emphasised that the fight against substance abuse is not the responsibility of law enforcement agencies alone, but requires the combined efforts of families, educational institutions, communities, civil society and the administration.
Terming Dibrugarh as an important centre of Assam’s history, heritage and development, Shri Acharya said the district’s vibrant youth possess immense potential to shape the future of the State. He urged young people to lead healthy, disciplined and purposeful lives and channel their energy, talent and aspirations towards nation-building.
Referring to Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi’s vision of Viksit Bharat, the Governor said a developed India requires a healthy, confident and empowered youth population. He called upon the youth to become active participants in the movement for a Nasha Mukt Bharat and contribute to the larger goal of building a developed India.
On the occasion of the birth anniversary of Mahapurush Srimanta Sankaradeva, Shri Acharya paid rich tributes to the Gurujona and urged the youth to draw inspiration from his teachings of humanity, compassion, discipline, devotion and righteous conduct. He called upon them to resolve to build a society where narcotic substances have no place.
The Governor particularly urged parents to maintain an atmosphere of love, trust and open communication with their children and remain attentive to their concerns, company and activities. He said that sustained awareness, prevention, community participation and support for young people are essential to addressing substance abuse effectively.
Following the public meeting, the Governor commenced the Padayatra from the District Library after paying floral tributes to Mahatma Gandhi at the premises. He then led the Padayatra towards Chowkidinghee Field. Students, teachers, NCC cadets, representatives of educational and social institutions, NGOs, retired armed forces personnel, members of civil society, elected representatives, and officers of the district administration and police participated in the Padayatra.
Appreciating the enthusiastic participation of the people of Dibrugarh, Shri Acharya called upon all sections of society to carry forward the message of awareness and prevention and work collectively towards a healthier and drug-free Assam.
Earlier, Dibrugarh District Commissioner Bikram Kairi administered the Nasha Mukt Bharat Sankalp pledge to the participants.
Transformation and Development Minister Rameshwar Teli, Rajya Sabha MP Terash Gowala, MLAs Binod Hazarika and Chakradhar Gogoi, Mayor of Dibrugarh Municipal Corporation Dr. Saikat Patra, Vice Chancellor of Dibrugarh University Prof.Jiten Hazarika; District Commissioner Bikram Kairi, SSP Gaurav Abhijit Dilip, Chairman, Assam Tourism Development Corporation, Riturporna Barua, senior officers of the district administration and police, and representatives of various social and educational institutions were present on the occasion.
