Governor attends 24th Convocation of Dibrugarh University

Guwahati,Rongili Barta: Assam Governor and Chancellor of Dibrugarh University, Shri Lakshman Prasad Acharya, attended the 24th Convocation Ceremony of Dibrugarh University held at Dibrugarh today.

Addressing the convocation, Governor Shri Acharya congratulated the graduating students and described the convocation as a celebration of their dedication, perseverance and academic achievement. He also congratulated renowned surgeon Dr. Sarbeswar Bhuyan who was conferred the honorary Doctor of Science (D.Sc.) degree, and eminent poet and writer Smt. Mamang Dai, who was awarded the honorary Doctor of Literature (D.Litt.) degree, in recognition of their outstanding contributions to society and literature.

In his address, the Governor emphasized that the true purpose of education is not only the acquisition of knowledge but also the development of character and values. Referring to the ancient Indian ideal “Sa Vidya Ya Vimuktaye,” he said that true education liberates individuals from ignorance and broadens their perspective towards society and nation-building.

Highlighting India’s rapid transformation driven by innovation, science, entrepreneurship and technology, the Governor said that the energy and talent of the youth are the country’s greatest strength. He noted that India is working towards the vision of building a  Viksit Bharat by 2047, and the contribution of young minds will be crucial in achieving this national goal.

Stressing the importance of technological advancement, the Governor said that the world is witnessing unprecedented changes through Artificial Intelligence, digital revolution and automation, which are reshaping economies and societies. “You are the generation that will shape the direction and destiny of India. Therefore, we must not only be passengers in this digital revolution, but also become its drivers,” he said, urging the students to use innovation and research to contribute to the development of Assam and the nation.

The Governor also noted that Dibrugarh, widely known as the “Tea City of India,” has a unique identity shaped by its vast tea gardens, natural beauty and hardworking people. Drawing a parallel with the tea gardens that produce fragrant tea after years of nurturing, he remarked that Dibrugarh University has similarly nurtured generations of students whose contributions are making a mark across various fields in the country and beyond.

He appreciated the role of the university in promoting education, research and social responsibility in the region. The Governor also lauded the university’s initiatives aimed at extending educational and cultural opportunities to tea garden communities through workshops organized in collaboration with the Dr. Bhupen Hazarika Centre for Performing Arts.

Encouraging the graduates to uphold values of service, integrity and compassion, the Governor urged them to use their knowledge and skills for the welfare of society, particularly for the uplift of the weaker sections, and to remain proud ambassadors of Assam’s rich cultural heritage.

It may be mentioned that a total of 12,266 students had applied for the convocation, of whom 1,971 students received their degrees at the ceremony. 126 scholars were awarded doctoral degrees while 42 students received gold medals for their academic performance. Out of these, 38 medals were awarded in the postgraduate category, and three students were honoured as the best graduates in Arts, Science and Commerce. The university also announced that convocation certificates will be made available in digital format, making it easier for students to access and download them.

The convocation ceremony was attended Vice-Chancellor Prof. Jiten Hazarika, Registrar Dr. Parmananda Sonowal, distinguished academicians, members of the University Court, Academic Council and Executive Council, faculty members, students and other dignitaries.
