Governor attends cleanliness drive under Seva Sankalp Saptah

Governor urges upon the youth to make cleanliness a way of life and take a pledge to uphold service and contribute to building a clean, healthy, and prosperous state

Guwahati, Rongili Barta: As a part of Seva Sankalp Saptah that Lok Bhavan, Assam has launched on 21 February, 2026, Governor Shri Lakshman Prasad Acharya today attended a cleanliness drive along with GMC Mayor Mrigen Sarania at Latasil playground here in the city.

Speaking on the occasion, the Governor lauded the efforts of the Guwahati Municipal Corporation under its Mayor Mrigen Sarania. He highlighted that Guwahati’s rise to the 44th position in the national cleanliness ranking in 2025, from an earlier rank of 402, marks a historic and commendable achievement. The Governor congratulated the Mayor, his team, and particularly the sanitation workers whose dedication has made this transformation possible.

Speaking on the significance of the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, the Governor stated that the mission is not merely about sanitation but a foundation for nation-building. Drawing inspiration from Mahatma Gandhi, who considered cleanliness more important than freedom, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi who made cleanliness a national movement, the Governor said that launched in the year 2014, Swachh Bharat Abhiyan has evolved into a mass movement uniting citizens across the country.

During his address, the Governor expressed deep gratitude for the affection and cooperation he has received from the people of Assam and the Northeast during his three years of service as the Governor first as the Governor of Sikkim and now as the Governor of Assam. He praised the resilience, and aspiration of the people, acknowledging their efforts as a constant source of inspiration.

Paying special tribute to sanitation workers, he described them as guardians of public health and protectors of cleanliness. He urged citizens to respect their silent and disciplined service that ensures clean roads and organized surroundings every day. Highlighting the cultural significance of cleanliness in Indian tradition, the Governor quoted the Sanskrit saying “Shuchirbhutah Shuchih Bhavet,” emphasizing that true purity encompasses both external cleanliness and inner conduct. He stressed that a clean environment is essential for a healthy society, disease prevention, environmental protection, and a secure future for coming generations.

Calling upon the youth of the state to lead by example, the Governor urged them to make cleanliness a way of life and take a pledge to uphold service, respect labour, and contribute to building a clean, healthy, and prosperous state. He moreover said that every small effort contributes to meaningful transformation and that individual responsibility is the cornerstone of real patriotism.

Commissioner and Secretary to the Governor S.S. Meenakshi Sundaram, Commissioner GMC Chinmay Prakash Phukan, Deputy Mayor Smita Roy, Chairman Bhupen Barua, Vice-Chairperson Ratna Singh, officers of the GMC, volunteers and youth and several other dignitaries were present on the occasion.
