Women for Trees – Let’s Stand Together for a Greener Tomorrow, Led by Women Inspired by Mothers
Phase II: The Plantation Drive
Organised by: AMRUT, Assam & DAY–NULM, Assam
Dispur, Rongili Barta- In alignment with the Government of India’s ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam‘ initiative, the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs is launching a nationwide tree plantation campaign under the AMRUT Mitra programme. In Assam, this campaign is being spearheaded jointly by AMRUT, Assam and DAY–NULM, Assam.
This initiative aimed at strengthening urban environmental resilience through inclusive community participation by Self Help Groups (SHGs) members under the National Urban Livelihoods Mission (NULM), in collaboration with the Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT).
The campaign aims to address rising urban temperatures and enhance green cover in towns and cities through active community involvement. The campaign will unfold in three phases:
Phase I (21st May to 23rd May, 2025): SHG members will conduct site identification visits to water bodies, parks, water treatment plants, and other potential locations for plantation.
Phase II (5th June to 31st August, 2025): Plantation drives will be carried out at the identified sites by SHGS, contributing towards creating greener, cooler urban spaces.
Phase III (next 1-2 years): Sustained operation, maintenance, and care of the planted saplings will be undertaken to ensure their healthy growth and survival.
As part of Phase I, AMRUT, Assam and DAY–NULM, Assam jointly organised a unified site visit programme on 21st May, 2025 in 15 Urban Local Bodies (ULBS) across Assam with the enthusiastic participation of 210 women SHG members.
The upcoming Phase 2 will witness mass plantation activities spearheaded by SHG women, AMRUT Offiicials, NULM Officials and local authorities on June 5th, 2025 coinciding with World Environment Day. The campaign will focus on planting native species across designated urban sites, parks, and open spaces all in honor of motherhood and nature, embodying the spirit of “Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam” (One Tree in Mother’s Name).
This initiative not only contributes to MoHUA’s larger vision of urban greening under the AMRUT 2.0 framework but also celebrates the nurturing power of women and their deep–rooted connection with nature.
