President inaugurates year-long celebrations of 400th birth anniversary of Lachit Barphukan
Lays foundations for Alaboi War Memorial and Lachit Maidam
Guwahati, February: President of India Ramnath Kovind in the presence of Governor Prof. Jagdish Mukhi and Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma inaugurated the year long celebrations of the 400th birth anniversary of Bir Lachit Barphukan at a function held at Srimanta Sankardev Kalakshetra in the city today.
Speaking at the function, the Governor said, “ Lachit Barphukan was one of the greatest military leaders of our country and a source of inspiration to all of us. His great victory in the battle of Saraighat over the Mughal Army makes him one of the truly great leaders of medieval India. Dexot Koi Momai Dangor Nohoy. When we speak about Lachit Barphukan these powerful words resonate our minds. Such was the dedication, devotion and patriotism of Lachit Barphukan. Assam is proud of having a son like him.”
The Governor also said that with a move to project the heroic activities of Lachit Barphukan the former Governor of Assam Lt. Gen (Retd.) S K Sinha, with his initiative installed a statue of Lachit Barphukan at the National Defence Academy, Khadakvasla, Pune and also instituted a Lachit Barphukan medal for best all round cadet in the NDA. Also at the Raj Bhavan, Lachit Barphukan’s memory is honoured as one of the wings of the Raj Bhavan has been named as Lachit Dwar. Lachit’s commitment to his duty and loyalty should be taken as a source of inspiration.
The Governor further expressed his happiness over the fact that the Govt. of Assam has taken steps to extend its tributes to this great soldier of the region. Setting up of the Alaboi battle war memorial in Kamrup district and construction of Lachit Barphukan maidam in Jorhat corroborate the efforts of the Govt.
The launching function was attended by PHE Minister Ranjit Kumar Dass, Minister for Agriculture and Veterinary Atul Bora, Handloom and Sericulture Minister U.G. Brahma along with a host of other dignitaries.
