Governor visits Sonitpur district; reviews government schemes

Guwahati, Rongili Barta- Assam Governor Gulab Chand Kataria on Wednesday visited Sonitpur district and held a review meeting with Deputy Commissioner, Sonitpur Deba Mishra, Superintendent of Police, Heads of Security Agencies, and all Heads of the line Departments of the district in the conference hall of the Deputy Commissioner’s office, Tezpur. The meeting was also attended by MP Tezpur Pallab Lochan Das, MLA Barchalla Ganesh Kumar Limbu, MLA Gohpur Utpal Borah, MLA Tezpur Prithviraj Rava, MLA Biswanath Pramod Borthakur.  The Governor took a comprehensive review of the status and progress of the flagship schemes implemented by both the Central and State governments in various key departments, including Education, Health, Water Resources, Forest, PWD, Agriculture etc. The Governor, however, expressed his satisfaction with the overall progress made by different schemes in the district. The Governor also gave valuable suggestions aimed at expediting the completion of all ongoing government projects and schemes within a specific timeframe. Stressed was laid on ensuring that the projects adhere to the quality guidelines prescribed for each scheme. The Governor also took stock of the progress of different schemes and programmes like  MGNREGA, PMAY-G, Amrit Sarovar, PM Kisan, and TB Mukt Abhiyan. He underpinned the need of involving educational institutions in creating awareness about drug and alcohol abuse. He asked the concerned authorities to put up information charts depicting the negative effects of alcohol, enabling students to understand the harmful consequences of alcohol and other substances. By doing so, the Governor hoped that the educational institutions will become a focal point for educating young individuals about the dangers of substance abuse. Regarding “one district one product” initiative, the Governor asked the district administration to promote one product which is inherently associated with the culture and heritage of the district. He also said that considering the popularity of ‘Tezpur Litchi’, the fruit can very become the product of Sonitpur district.  The Governor also asked the administration to motivate the civic bodies as well as the people in general to plant more fruit bearing trees in government schools and office compounds, promoting a greener and healthier environment. The Governor also took stock of the Anganwadi Centres and emphasized the need for smooth functioning of the institutions for proper development of children. Later, the Governor led a meeting with beneficiaries of diverse government schemes. The Governor also chaired a meeting with the representatives from various social organizations where they apprised the Governor about various issues relating to the welfare of the people and development of Tezpur town.
