Governor attends International Day of Yoga celebrations
Launches ‘PM Shri Gaonwe-Gaonwe Yoga Maha Abhiyan’ and ‘Amar Mati-Amar Nayak’
Guwahati,Rongili Barta: Assam Governor Shri Lakshman Prasad Acharya today launched two flagship initiatives ‘PM Shri Gaonwe-Gaonwe Yoga Maha Abhiyan’ and ‘Amar Mati-Amar Nayak’at a programme held at the historic Gandhi Ashram in Sualkuchi in connection with the 12th International Day of Yoga.

The flagship initiatives launched with a view to promoting healthy living, helping people imbibing cultural consciousness and patriotism in six districts namely Kamrup, Bongaigaon, Cachar, Jorhat, Kokrajhar and Sonitpur. In the first phase, both the programmes will be implemented in these six districts and subsequently expanded across the State.

The ‘PM Shri Gaonwe-Gaonwe Yoga Maha Abhiyan’, inspired by the vision of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, seeks to take the message and benefits of Yoga to every village, family and resident of Assam, making healthy living a people’s movement. The campaign is in line with the 12th International Day of Yoga, celebrated on the theme, “Yoga for Healthy Ageing”, which underscores the importance of maintaining physical and mental well-being throughout life.

The ‘Amar Mati-Amar Nayak’ initiative aims to identify and honour unsung local heroes from different walks of life, whose selfless contributions have enriched society. The programme seeks to preserve Assam’s rich heritage and inspire younger generations with ideals of service, and duty as shown by their predecessors.
Governor Shri Acharya extended his greetings on the occasion of the International Day of Yoga and participated in the Yoga session along with others. Speaking on the occasion, Governor Shri Acharya described Sualkuchi as a place, which is famous for its role being self-reliant. He lauded the skilled weavers of the town for preserving and promoting the State’s rich handloom tradition.

The Governor said that both the initiatives like ‘PM Shri Gaonwe-Gaonwe Yoga Maha Abhiyan’ and ‘Amar Mati-Amar Nayak’, represent important steps towards building a healthy, conscious and self-confident Assam. He said that while yoga strengthens the body and mind, the works and ideals of great personalities strengthen the soul of the society. He emphasized that a developed society and a developed nation are built upon healthy, conscious and inspiring citizens.
The Governor on the occasion also paid homage to Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoloi, Maniram Dewan and countless known and unknown heroes of Assam, and said that remembering and honouring such personalities help in preserving the State’s glorious legacy and nurturing a strong spirit of national pride and responsibility among future generations.

The Governor also presented awards to the winners of the District-Level Yoga Competition organized by the Kamrup District Administration.
The programme was attended by MLA of Hajo-Sualkuchi constituency Prakash Chandra Das, Commissioner and Secretary to the Governor S.S. Meenakshi Sundaram, OSD to the Governor Prof. Bechan Lal, DDC Kamrup Sushanta Kumar Dutta, Kamrup Zila Parishad member Dheeraj Mahanta, yoga gurus, and a host of other dignitaries.
