Kamrup unites under Governor’s call for a Drug-Free Assam

Guwahati,Rongili Barta: Kamrup district today witnessed a strong expression of collective resolve against drug abuse as hundreds of students, youth volunteers, NCC and NSS cadets, social organisation representatives, ex-servicemen, civil society members, government officials and citizens joined the Nasha Mukt Bharat Sankalp Padayatra led by the  Assam Governor Shri Lakshman Prasad Acharya, from  Haradutta Biradutta Bhavan at  Rangia.

Addressing the enthusiastic gathering, Governor Shri Acharya said that Rangia, with its rich history of social unity and collective action, was a fitting place to renew the commitment towards a drug-free society. Recalling the historic Rangia Peasant Uprising, he said the district had demonstrated the strength of collective action during the freedom movement, and carrying forward the resolve for a drug-free India from this historically significant land, conveyed a message of social responsibility and unity.

Stating Assam’s rich spiritual and cultural heritage, Shri Acharya recalled the contributions of Mahapurush Srimanta Sankardev and Sri Sri Madhavdev whose teachings placed devotion, humanity, moral conduct and social harmony at the heart of community life. He also referred to the enduring contributions of cultural icons such as Kalaguru Bishnu Prasad Rabha and Rupkonwar Jyotiprasad Agarwala, whose lives and works inspired social harmony and collective consciousness.

Speaking about Kamrup’s rich legacy and it’s potential to contribute to development, the Governor said that the vision of a Viksit Bharat is closely linked with the wellbeing and potential of the country’s youth. He stressed that young people of Kamrup district must be supported through education, skill development, culture, sports and opportunities for constructive participation in society, while concerted efforts must be made to protect them from substance abuse.

He said the Nasha Mukt Bharat Sankalp Padyatra was aimed at taking the message of a drug-free society to every section of the people of Assam. Appreciating the enthusiastic participation at Rangia, he said the presence of students, NCC and NSS cadets, members of social organisations, women and citizens reflected a shared commitment to creating a healthier and safer future for the younger generation.

Calling for sustained public participation, Governor Shri Acharya said that every step taken in the campaign should carry the message of awareness and every collective effort should inspire hope in families affected by substance abuse. He urged citizens to work together so that young people are empowered to pursue their aspirations and contribute positively to the progress of the nation.

District Commissioner Deba Kumar Mishra administered the Nasha Mukt Bharat pledge to the participants, calling upon them to remain committed to creating awareness against drug abuse.

After the completion of the Padayatra the Governor paid floral tributes at the statue of Mahatma Gandhi near the Haradutta Biradutta Bhavan.

The programme was attended by MLA of Rangia Bhabesh Kalita, District Commissioner, Kamrup, Deba Kumar Mishra, Chairman, Zilla Parishad, Kamrup, Nipon Bhuyan, CEO Zilla Parishad, Kamrup, Siddhartha Goswami, SP, Kamrup Subhasish Baruah,  Chairman, Rangia Municipal Board, Amarendra Lahkar along with administrative and police officials, representatives of social organisations and other dignitaries.
