Dhubri walks for a Drug-Free Assam as Governor leads Nasha Mukt Bharat Sankalp Padayatra
Guwahati,Rongili Barta: The campaign for a drug-free Assam received a strong response of public participation in Dhubri today as Governor of Assam Shri Lakshman Prasad Acharya led the Nasha Mukt Bharat Sankalp Padayatra’, bringing together students, NCC and NSS cadets, social organisations, ex-servicemen, civil society representatives, government officials and citizens in a collective call against drug abuse in Dhubri.
Expressing his thoughts on the occasion, the Governor said that the fight against drug abuse must go beyond individual programmes and develop into a sustained social movement involving families, educational institutions, community organisations and citizens.
Speaking on the crucial role of young people, Shri Acharya said that the energy, creativity and potential of the youth constitute one of the nation’s greatest strengths. He called upon young people to remain focused on their constructive goals and encouraged them to make sports, yoga, meditation, reading, knowledge and creative pursuits part of their lives.
The Governor underlined that the vision of a Viksit Bharat and a Viksit Assam cannot be achieved through economic progress alone. A healthy, confident, disciplined and empowered younger generation, he said, is equally essential to the country’s development.
Calling for a collective resolve against substance abuse, Shri Acharya gave a clear message to the gathering “Say No to Drugs, Say Yes to Life.” He appealed to parents, teachers, voluntary and social organisations and citizens to work together to create an environment in which young people receive timely guidance, encouragement and support.
He also urged upon educational institutions and communities to expand awareness programmes and provide greater opportunities for sports, skill development, cultural activities and other constructive engagements for young people. Greater communication within families, he said, can also play an important role in preventing drug abuse and guiding youth towards positive choices.
Reflecting on Dhubri’s distinctive social and cultural character, the Governor said that the district’s tradition of social harmony, diversity and public participation could provide fresh strength to the anti-drug campaign. He expressed confidence that the message emerging from Dhubri would reach communities across Assam.
District Commissioner, Dhubri Dibakar Nath administered the Nasha Mukt Bharat Sankalp pledge to the participants, who collectively reaffirmed their commitment to creating a society free from drug abuse.
Following the address, Governor Shri Lakshman Prasad Acharya flagged off the padyatra from the District Library, Dhubri, and walked alongside hundreds of participants towards the the DC Office, Dhubri.On reaching the destination, the Governor paid floral tributes to Mahatma Gandhi, recalling the enduring values of self-discipline, truth and social responsibility associated with his life and ideals.
The procession brought together people from different sections of society, reflecting a broad-based commitment to the campaign. Students and youth participated prominently, joined by NCC and NSS cadets, members of civil society, social organisations, ex-servicemen, officials and other citizens. Minister for Social Justice and Empowerment etc Ashwini Rai Sarkar, MLA Jibesh Rai, District Commissioner Dibakar Nath, SSP Debashish Bora, Chairman, Dhubri Municipal Board, Debomoy Sanyal, Chairman, Dhubri-Gauripur Development Authority, Dipak Saha, senior government functionaries, representatives of various social organisations and other dignitaries were present on the occasion.
