Governor Shri Acharya attends 4th convocation of Srimanta Sankaradeva University of Health Sciences

Guwahati,Rongili Barta: Assam Governor Shri Lakshman Prasad Acharya attended the 4th Convocation Ceremony of Srimanta Sankaradeva University of Health Sciences at the Jyoti Bishnu Antarjatik Kala Mandir here today, in the presence of Vice President of India, Shri C. P. Radhakrishnan, and Chief Minister of Assam, Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma.

Congratulating the graduates, the Governor said that the convocation marked not only the culmination of years of hard work, discipline and perseverance, but also the beginning of a new chapter of responsibility and service.

Highlighting the significance of the university being named after Mahapurush Srimanta Sankaradeva, Governor Shri Acharya said that his teachings of humanity, social consciousness, harmony and respect for every individual resonate deeply with the fundamental spirit of healthcare- the respect for human life. He urged the graduating students to combine medical knowledge and professional excellence with compassion and sensitivity.

The Governor said that Assam is witnessing significant transformation in health education and healthcare services, with expansion of medical colleges and nursing institutions, strengthening of health infrastructure and greater availability of advanced treatment facilities. He said that the ultimate purpose of this transformation is to bring quality healthcare closer to the common people.

Referring to the initiative of establishing the state-of-the-art Proton Beam Therapy facility at Gauhati Medical College and Hospital at a cost of approximately Rs. 600 crore, the Governor described it as a significant milestone in Assam’s healthcare journey. He said that the facility would strengthen the State’s capacity for advanced cancer treatment and bring new hope to patients from Assam and the entire Northeast. He congratulated Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma for the initiative.

Governor Shri Acharya moreover said that healthcare is a sensitive and noble field where every patient represents the hopes and aspirations of an entire family. He called upon the young professionals to uphold ethics, empathy and compassion alongside medical skill and knowledge, and to regard healthcare as a sacred responsibility to protect human life and serve society.

He also urged upon the students to remain abreast of rapid advancements in Artificial Intelligence, robotics, genomics, telemedicine and digital healthcare, while ensuring that technology remains guided by human values. Welcoming the  Vice President to Assam, the Governor said that his gracious presence and long years of dedicated public service would inspire the young graduates and give them a renewed sense of purpose.

Education Minister Dr. Ranoj Pegu, Health Minister Shri Ashok Singhal, Chief Secretary Dr. Ravi Kota, Vice-Chancellor of Srimanta Sankaradeva University of Health Sciences Dr. Anup Kumar Barman and other dignitaries were present at the convocation.
