Assam Governor along with Vice President of India and Chief Minister attends Golden Jubilee Celebrations of Geetanagar College
Governor Shri Acharya hails Geetanagar College’s five-decade journey of empowering youth through education
Guwahati, Rongili Barta: Assam Governor Shri Lakshman Prasad Acharya today attended the Golden Jubilee celebration of Geetanagar College in the presence of Vice President of India, Shri C. P. Radhakrishnan, and Chief Minister of Assam, Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma, at Srimanta Sankardeva International Auditorium.
Congratulating the college on completing 50 years of its educational journey, Governor Shri Acharya said that Geetanagar College has made a significant contribution to expanding access to higher education and nurturing generations of young minds.
Recalling the institution’s origins, the Governor said the college was established in 1977 as a women’s college, at a time when opportunities for higher education for women were limited. He paid tribute to its founding Principal, Padma Shri Indira Miri, and founding Secretary, Suchitra Ray Chaudhuri, whose vision and dedication laid the foundation of the institution. He noted that its transformation into a co-educational institution in 2024 reflected its commitment to inclusive and accessible higher education.
Referring to the college motto, “Tamaso Ma Jyotirgamaya”, the Governor said that over five decades, the institution has guided students from the darkness of ignorance towards the light of knowledge, confidence, values and achievement. He said that education is not only about acquiring knowledge and skills but also about developing wisdom, character and consciousness.
Addressing the students, Shri Acharya urged them to dream big and make the best use of emerging opportunities in artificial intelligence, space science, biotechnology, semiconductors, renewable energy and startups. He called upon the youth to embrace technology and innovation while remaining deeply connected to their roots, culture and social responsibilities.
Highlighting Assam’s vast potential in biodiversity, agriculture, tourism, natural resources and its youthful population, the Governor said that the State has an important role to play as a gateway to Northeast India and in strengthening India’s engagement with Southeast Asia.
The Governor also highlighted the transformative vision of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi for building a knowledge-based, skill-oriented and innovation-driven India. He said the National Education Policy 2020 provides a strong framework for this transformation by emphasising creativity, research, skills, character building and nation-building.
Shri Acharya expressed confidence that Geetanagar College would continue to serve as a beacon of knowledge and values and contribute meaningfully to the development of Assam and the nation. The Governor also conveyed his gratitude to the Vice President for gracing the Golden Jubilee celebration and adding special significance to the occasion.
The programme was also attended by Education Minister Dr. Ranoj Pegu, Chief Secretary Dr. Ravi Kota, Commissioner and Secretary, Higher Education Narayan Kunwar, Principal of Geetanagar College Dr. Satyajit Kalita along with a host of other dignitaries.
