Raj Bhavan organizes Conclave on Implementation of NEP 2020 in Assam

NEP 2020 is a vision document for New India: Governor

Guwahati, Rongili Barta- Assam Governor Gulab Chand Kataria said that National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 is a vision document which is full with potential to facilitate the nation’s journey towards a new India. Speaking on the first day of the two day conclave on ‘Implementation of NEP 2020 in Assam at Assam Administrative Staff College here today the Governor said that NEP has envisioned  an education system rooted in Indian ethos that contributes directly to transforming India into an equitable and vibrant knowledge society, by providing high-quality education to all. He said that to reap rich dividends from NEP 2020, the government is charting some actionable points like common timetable, a common grading pattern and common curriculum and implementing them. He said that Assam is taking a lead role in implementing the provisions of NEP as the universities in the state should work in an accountable manner to implement NEP 2020 in their curriculum. The Governor also said that he hopes the conclave in Assam Administrative Staff College would provide an excellent platform for all the stakeholders to exchange ideas, share best practices, and explore innovative approaches to ensure the successful implementation of NEP 2020. The collective wisdom and experiences shared in the conclave would undoubtedly pave the way for the comprehensive realization of the policy objectives. The Governor also expressed happiness to the fact that the ratio of girl students in the state is more than the number of boys, whereas in many other states it is the opposite. Similarly the student teacher ratio is also good in Assam. Everything taken together has presented a vibrant landscape for the state to become a hub of education in the region.  As a part of NEP 2020, Governor Kataria also highlighted that there is a need to take effective steps relating to change of curriculum and allotment and accumulation of credit points.  Modules for multi-disciplinary, inter-disciplinary, trans-disciplinary courses are to be prepared and women oriented courses like dance, painting, designing etc. should be included. For the infrastructure development of educational institutions, the Governor during his speech also observed that the universities to which State government has allotted land, should get the master plan prepared soon by paying special attention to taking possession of the land, mutation proceedings etc. and coordinate with the concerned departments of the State government to speed up the construction works.  He also said that Convocation should be held regularly and the calendar should be determined by all the universities. November, December is the ideal time for convocation. He also said that placement cell should be formed and campus interviews should be conducted for placement of students. It may be noted that the conclave which has been organised by Raj Bhavan, Assam in partnership with Higher Education Department, Govt of Assam saw the presence of Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma and Minister of Education Dr. Ranoj Pegu. It may be mentioned that to effectively implement NEP 2020 within their respective educational institutions, the first day of the conclave had presentations from the Vice Chancellors of Gauhati University, Dibrugarh University, Assam Agricultural University, Cotton University, Assam Women’s University, Assam Science and Technology University, Madhavdev University, Bhattadev University, Bodoland University,  Sati Sadhnai University, Krishna Kanta Handique State Open  University, Majuli University of Culture, Kumar Bhaskar Varma Sanskrit and Ancient Studies University, Assam Rajiv Gandhi University of Cooperative Management, Rabindranath Tagore University, S S Aniruddhadeva Sports University, Tezpur University, Assam  University. Presentations were also made by six autonomous colleges – North Lakhimpur college, Nowgong college, J B college, Sivsagar college, Arya Vidyapeeth college and Furkating college. The conclave was attended among others by Advisor Education, Govt. of Assam Prof. Nani Gopal, Advisor Chancellor’s Secretariat Prof. M.K.Choudhury, Additional Chief Secretary Biswaranjan Samal, Commissioner and Secretary to the Governor S.S. Meenakshi Sundaram,  Chancellors of different universities,  Directors of Institutes, Principals of Autonomous Colleges, educationists from across the country and senior officers of the State government.
