In conjunction with ‘World Breastfeeding Week’
Today’s inauguration of breastfeeding rooms at the Guwahati Railway Station and Kamakhya Railway Station inaugurated at the premises of Guwahati Railway Station
Dispur, Rongili Barta- The State Project Management Unit POSHAN Abhiyaan Assam under the Department of Women and Child Development, Government of Assam today inaugurated a breastfeeding room at the premises of Guwahati Railway Station in conjunction with the celebration of ‘World Breastfeeding Week’. The room was inaugurated by Deba Kr. Kalita – Secretary to the Govt. of Assam, Women & Child Development Department, Assam. Healthy and well-nourished children are the backbone of a nation. Considering the nourishment of the child, breastfeeding plays an important role for the child. Breastfeeding also helps in improving the mother’s health. A woman plays the dual role of a home dweller and a bread earner. Thereby a mother needs support from both her family and the society to effectively deliver both the roles. Every year World Breastfeeding Week is celebrated from 1st to 7th August across the globe. This year’s theme is “Enabling breastfeeding: making a difference for working parents” which has focused attention on ensuring early initiation of breastfeeding within one hour after birth in both normal and caesarean section deliveries. WBW is a crucial platform to foster enabling environment for breastfeeding mothers and to emphasize role of breastfeeding in reducing child mortality, improving nutrition and enhancing early childhood development. For awareness generation activities and to build an enabling environment for breastfeeding, exclusive breastfeeding corners have been set up at Guwahati Railway Station and Kamakhya Railway station for ensuring privacy of mothers during the breastfeeding. The corners have been equipped with all the necessary IEC materials and wall displays for better knowledge and learning. These innovative corners will also spread the awareness and importance of breastfeeding for both the mother and child, among the general public across the genders. The inauguration programme was attended by Pranjit Das Superintendent i/c North East Railway, on behalf of Railway authority Guwahati, Sharmila Baishya-Joint Secretary W&CD, Abhijt Singha-Additional Director, Shamsera Hazarika- Joint Director, Dipti Phukan-Joint Director, Santanu Kumar Bhagawati- JPC POSHAN Abhiyaan, entire POSHAN Abhiyaan Officials and the UNICEF officials placed at Directorate of W&CD.
