Governor calls for cleanliness to become a way of life on Swachh Bharat Diwas
Guwahati,Rongili Barta: Assam Governor Shri Lakshman Prasad Acharya today attended the Swachh Bharat Diwas 2026 at Srimanta Sankardeva International Auditorium in Guwahati on the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti.

Speaking on the occasion, Governor Shri Acharya paid homage to Father of the nation Mahatma Gandhi and underscored that cleanliness is deeply rooted in India’s cultural traditions and is essential for a healthy and responsible society.
Highlighting the progress made through the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan launched in 2014, Shri Acharya said that public awareness about cleanliness has grown significantly, while stressing that much more remains to be done. He called for the participation of every section of society to make cleanliness a sustained habit rather than an activity limited to a particular day or campaign.

The Governor expressed special appreciation for sanitation workers, acknowledging their daily contribution to keeping roads and public spaces clean, and underlined the collective responsibility to ensure their welfare and dignity. He also called upon the youth to play a greater role in cleanliness and environmental initiatives. “The journey towards cleanliness must begin with ourselves,” as he urged the citizens to extend the same spirit of cleanliness from their homes to public spaces.

During the programme, the Governor also launched the Swachh Durga Puja Competition.
MP Dilip Saikia, MLA Vijay Gupta, Mayor GMC Mrigen Sarania, Deputy Mayor Smita Roy, Chief Secretary Dr Ravi Kota, CGM State Bank of India Atul Rathi, senior government officials, representatives of voluntary organisations, sanitation workers and other dignitaries were present at the event.
