Assam Governor flags off “ 60 day Anti-drug, tobacco and alcohol awareness campaign

Calls upon youth to stand against drug menace

Guwahati,Rongili Barta: With an aim to create awareness against drugs, tobacco and alcohol, Assam Governor Prof. Jagdish Mukhi today flagged off a 60-day ‘Anti-drug, tobacco and alcohol awareness campaign’ at a function organised at Raj Bhavan today.

        It may be noted that the campaign conceptualised by Byatikram MASDO, a social development organization has been launched for 60 days which is expected to generate mass awareness against consumption of contraband drugs, alcohol and tobacco.

     Speaking on the occasion, Governor Shri Mukhi hailed the campaign and said that it has the potential of creating awareness amongst the masses.

He also said, “Drug abuse is affecting the youth all over the world. It is hampering the society socially, culturally, emotionally and economically. In Assam, there is sizeable number of people who are addicted to any kind of narcotic substances”. Therefore, he said, ‘We need to raise our voice to create awareness in the society on the bad effects of drugs, alcohol and tobacco. I hope this awareness campaign will be very successful in raising awareness of the major problems of drug abuse and consumption of alcoholic drinks and tobacco.”

The Governor at the same time, congratulated and hailed the efforts of Assam Police for cracking down on drug peddlers and traffickers in the state. He said that the Police across the state with its men and materials dealt a heavy blow on the drug trades resulting in confiscating of huge cache of contraband substances in the state. Moreover, making its intention clear of zero tolerance against drugs menace, the contraband drugs thus seized were set on fire. He also said the state administration has been equally very strict and uncompromising in dealing with the illicit liquor as the Excise department along with Police conducted raids especially in the tea garden area and busted several places where illegal manufacturing and trading for liquor are conducted.

   The Governor also said that alcohol and tobacco consumption is equally harmful and should be avoided. They pose severe health hazards. The Governor wished the campaign a great success and appealed to all sections of the society at large to show its positive resolve against drug abuse. He also said that the new generation should come up and strive hard to create deterrence against consumption of any narcotic substances.  The Governor urged upon the educational institutions to motivate the youth to contribute to national development and not to get indulged in such harmful practices.

Director General of Police Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta,  Chairman and Managing Director of NEDFi P.V.S.L.N. Murty, also spoke on the occasion.

Noted actor Pranjal Saikia, MD, ASDMA Ankur Jain along with a host of other dignitaries attended the launching ceremony.
