Governor attends 4th Convocation of Cotton University

Asks graduating students to lead the journey of transforming India into a developed nation

Guwahati, Rongili Barta: Assam Governor and Chancellor of Cotton University Shri Lakshman Prasad Acharya said that India’s resolve to become a developed nation by 2047 rests on the shoulders of the students as he urged the students to lead their lives with determination, contribute to the nation’s progress, and shape a bright future for themselves and the country.

Presiding over the 4th Convocation of Cotton University at Srimanta Sankardeva International Auditorium here today, the Governor conferred degrees upon 2804 graduates in presence of Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma. He said that the graduating students who received academic guidance from Cotton University, which is a historic institute of national repute should use their knowledge for the transformation of the state as well as the nation. Shri Acharya on the occasion also commended the university’s continued emphasis on skill-oriented and experience-based learning and acknowledged its collaborative initiatives with institutions such as Jawaharlal Nehru University, Punjab University, and Tezpur University under the National Research Foundation. He said that these collaborations and partnerships would accelerate research and innovation in the state.

Governor Shri Acharya expressed profound joy and extended heartfelt congratulations to the graduates, acknowledging that the day stood as a mark of their dedication, perseverance, and commitment to excellence. He noted that the collective effort of both students and faculty had culminated in a moment of pride for the entire institution, adding that the presence of parents and guardians further elevated the significance of the occasion.

Reflecting on the significance of the day, the Governor said that some moments create history while others shape the future, and the convocation marked a confluence of both. Quoting a Sanskrit verse that reminds graduates that knowledge must illuminate their actions and guide their future, he asked the newly conferred degree-holders to carry forward the values and wisdom they had gained in the university. He expressed pride over the notable number of female graduates, calling it a powerful indication of society’s growing commitment to women’s empowerment and an essential step towards equitable progress.

Highlighting the rich artistic, literary, and cultural heritage of Assam, Governor Shri Acharya spoke about the enduring influence of Srimanta Sankardeva and emphasized that the state’s unique identity was built upon his legacy. He noted that Cotton University stood at the intersection of historical legacy and future aspirations, rapidly emerging as a distinguished centre of education and research with global recognition.

Drawing inspiration from Swami Vivekananda, the Governor reiterated that true education is one that builds character, shapes life, and harmonizes thought. He also spoke on the vision of the Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi, who sees education not just as a path to employment but as a means of nation-building. The Governor urged the students to embrace this philosophy by ensuring that their learning contributes meaningfully to society and is directed toward a purposeful national vision.

Acknowledging the fast-changing global landscape, the Governor encouraged the graduates to seize emerging opportunities, adapt to new technologies, and transform challenges into avenues for growth. He reminded them that their knowledge, skills, and empathy must extend beyond personal advancement and serve the broader interests of society, the nation, and humanity. In this context, he recalled the timeless contribution of Dr. Bhupen Hazarika, whose songs championed the spirit of humanity and celebrated Assamese culture.

It may be mentioned that The Governor conferred honorary D.Litt.(Honoria Causa) degree upon eminent Assamese writer and scholar Dr. Ranjit Kumar Dev Goswami for his  invaluable contributions to literature and cultural studies for enriching the academic and cultural heritage. He also presented posthumous honorary D.Litt. to cultural icon Zubeen  Garg.

Vice chancellor of Cotton University Prof. Ramesh Ch. Deka, Executive Director  AIIMS, Guwahati Prof. Ashok Puranik, Registrar, Cotton University Dr. Hiren Deka, members of the Executive and Academic Council, faculties along with a host of other dignitaries were also present on the occasion.
