Governor attends valedictory session of the conclave on development of fishery sector in Assam, 2025

Guwahati,Rongili Barta: Assam Governor Shri Lakshman Prasad Acharya attended the valedictory session of the two day conclave on the development of the fishery sector in Assam, 2025, held at the Assam Administrative Staff College, Guwahati here today. The conclave was organized by Raj Bhavan, Assam, in collaboration with the Department of Fisheries, Government of Assam.

In his address at the valedictory function, Governor Shri Acharya emphasized the rich potential of Assam’s fisheries and the timely relevance of the conclave in promoting sustainable and organized development of the sector. He noted that the deliberations held over the sessions provided an invaluable platform to identify the key challenges and explore innovative solutions for the growth of fisheries in the state.

Highlighting the depth of the discussions that took place over the last two days in the conclave, the Governor stated, “The discussions in the conclave and the actionable decisions arising from this conclave will be very helpful in implementing the recommendations in an integrated, planned, and time-bound manner”. He also said that the implemented recommendations can help Assam to achieve self-sufficiency in fish production and emerge as a major exporter in the field. He called for a transformation of fisheries from a traditional occupation to a scientific and entrepreneurial enterprise, stressing the need to equip youth with access to credit, modern technologies, training, and robust market linkages.

Governor Shri Acharya expressed gratitude to the participating fisheries experts, including Dr. Joykrushna Jena, Deputy Director General (Fisheries Science), Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), New Delhi, and other scientists and directors from institutions such as CIFRI, CIFA, and NABARD. He stated, “The insights and recommendations shared during this conclave will not only benefit Assam but also contribute to the holistic development of the fisheries sector across the country.”

The Governor received the Final Report of the conclave from Dr. Jena, summarizing the key outcomes and forward-looking strategies discussed during the sessions. The report is expected to serve as a guiding document for policy-making and sectoral reforms, the Governor added.

Minister of Fisheries, Shri Krishnendu Paul, in his address, reiterated the importance of the conclave’s discussions on water resource management, fish seed production, marketing, and governance reforms. He described the final report as a visionary roadmap for ushering in a ‘Blue Revolution’ in Assam, aligning with the national goal of doubling farmers’ income and making Assam a prominent hub for fish and fish seed exports.

Addl. Chief Secretary, Department of Fisheries, Kailash Chand Samaria; Deputy Director General (Fisheries Science), ICAR, Dr. Joykrushna Jena; OSD to the Governor, Prof. Bechan Lal; Commissioner and Secretary to the Governor, S.S. Meenakshi Sundaram; senior scientists, scholars, and officials from Raj Bhavan and the Department of Fisheries were present in the conclave.
