Bhupen Hazarika and SD Burman create music for unity: Governor

Guwahati, Rongili Barta: Assam Governor Shri Lakshman Prasad Acharya today paid rich homage to legendary music director and singer S.D. Burman at a commemorative event held at the Pragjyoti ITA Centre for Performing Arts in the city here.

In his address, Governor Shri Acharya underlined music’s role not only as a means of entertainment but also as a unifying force. He highlighted S.D. Burman’s significant contributions to Indian cultural heritage through his timeless compositions.

“It’s a matter of pride that S.D. Burman was a son of Northeast India,” said Governor Acharya, noting the artiste’s royal Tripura origin and his deep connection with common people. The Governor also drew attention to the audience to the historical cultural bonds between Assam and Tripura, which are reflected in Burman’s musical repertoire.

The ceremony also honored Bharat Ratna Dr. Bhupen Hazarika, another musical legend whose creations also promoted unity and brotherhood. “Both S.D. Burman and Dr. Bhupen Hazarika created music that transcends borders and touches hearts worldwide, demonstrating art’s unique power to unite people,” the Governor remarked.

The event was organized by Byatikram Masdo, which received praise for its efforts in preserving the legacy of these musical giants. The organization’s initiative to commemorate Bharat Ratna Dr. Hazarika’s birth anniversary in Tripura alongside S.D. Burman’s death anniversary in Assam  was particularly commended for strengthening cultural ties between the two states.

Governor Acharya expressed confidence in the sustained preservation and promotion of the region’s rich cultural heritage through meaningful cultural exchanges that connect the entire Northeast.

It may be mentioned that S .D. Burman memorial lifetime achievement award 2024 was presented to noted singer Zubeen Garg.

The event was attended by the Governor of Telangana Shri Jishnu Dev Varma, eminent singer Manisha Hazarika, actress Seema Biswas along with a host of other dignitaries.
