SITA Vice Chairman Shri Narayan Chandra Borkataky visits Rangia College for review meeting of ongoing project
Dispur, Rongili Barta: Hon’ble Vice-Chairman Shri Narayan Chandra Borkataky of State Innovation & Transformation Aayog (SITA), Assam visited Rangia College, Rangia on September 30, 2024 for survey of Botanical Garden for the ongoing SITA sponsored Project entitled- “Ex-Situ Cultivation of Medicinal plant & Conservation of Rare and Endangered Plant-Setting up Herbal Garden”. With logistic support from SITA, Rangia College, Rangia aims to create awareness drive about the medicinal plants to the common people establishing herbal garden and involving the cultivation of rare or threatened plants outside of their natural habitat so that the coming generation of the country is aware of the environmental degradation that can cause by deforestation, industrialization.
The project also aims to aware the common people for income generation by establishing Herbal Garden, encourage farmers & researchers etc., for Patent Right, accelerate research and development sector by involving various institutions etc., of the subject concerned and to establish Herbal Garden in the college campus. It needs to be mentioned that the MoA was signed on May 5, 2022 last between SITA, Govt. of Assam and Rangia College, Rangia to take up this project.
On visiting the college campus Hon’ble Vice-Chairman enquired regarding the rare and endangered plants which were collected from different areas of Assam. Some of the RET plants that are already planted in the college campus garden namely– Hollong (State tree), Sia Nahor (Endemic), Rudraksha plant, Agaru (Sanchi), Dhuna, Holokh, All spice, Rauvolfia serpentina, Kalmegh, Lemon grass & Citronella, Boch, Red & white chandan and many other important fruit, medicinal and spices plants. He was very much satisfied after knowing about the extended works in the neighboring areas done under SITA Project. He also praised and inspired Dr. Ranjita Tamuli Talukdar, Principal Investigator & Dr. Snigdha Sarkar, Member of Rangia College with the entire team for their dedicated works.
After visiting the garden, a review meeting was held with the Teachers Unit, Rangia College where Dr. Brajendra Saikia, Principal of Rangia College delivered his welcome speech. Addressing the gathering, Honorable Vice-Chairman Shri Narayan Chandra Borkotoky, SITA delivered his inspiring comments about the project with fruitful suggestions for the future development of the project. He is hopeful that through the project, the people may know the usefulness of herbal plants and aware the common people on setting up herbal gardens for income generation and for research works.
Shri Dwijendra S. Hazari , Shri Alakesh Kakati along with other officials of SITA and Rangia College Teachers Unit were also present at the review meeting. The meeting was conducted by Shri Deepak Kalita, Secretary, Teacher’s Unit, Rangia College with a vote of thanks.
