The expedition will forever be etched in the history of Assam: Governor
Guwahati,Rongili Barta: In recognition to the daunting achievement of the members of Assam Mountaineering Association, Assam Governor Shri Lakshman Prasad Acharya felicitated its members for their exceptional achievement in successfully scaling a previously unconquered peak at an altitude of 6,369 metres in the Kyagar La range of Ladakh at a felicitation ceremony held at Raj Bhavan here today.
Commending the team for its courage and resilience, Governor Shri Acharya said, “The expedition was not only a technically demanding pursuit but also a profound test of mental and physical strength of its members. By traversing the Kyagar La trekking route and summiting it’s virgin peak, you have shown that the youth of Assam are not bound by geography — they are equipped with the tenacity to rise to the highest challenges of their life and profession.”
Addressing the climbers, the Governor added, “You have not merely reached the summit; you have connected the history, honouring tradition, and inspiring the future. Your heroic endeavor embodies both fearless ambition and deep-rooted pride in our heritage. Let this triumph serve as a lasting beacon for generations to come, which will be etched in the pride of the people of Assam.”
The Assam Mountaineering Association’s expedition, which culminated in the successful ascent on April 21, was part of the association’s Triple Peak Expedition. The team was led by mountaineers Shekhar Bordoloi and Jayanta Nath, who were the first to reach the summit. They were soon joined by teammates Surajit Ronghang, Bhaskar Barman, Upen Chakraborty, and Henry David Teron.
In a gesture reflecting Assam’s rich cultural pride, the Governor hailed the association for naming the newly scaled peak ‘Lachit Kangri’, in honour of the legendary Ahom general Bir Lachit Borphukan.
