Governor attends R.G. Baruah Memorial Awards 2025
Guwahati, Rongili Barta: Assam Governor Shri Lakshman Prasad Acharya presented the R.G. Baruah Memorial Awards 2025 to Padmashree D.N. Bezbaruah in the field of Journalism, Padmashree Jahnu Barua in the field of Culture, Dr. Narendra Nath Dutta in the field of Business and Entrepreneurship and Larsing L.D. Sawyan in the field of Sports at a ceremony held at a city hotel here today. The event was also attended by Union Minister of Waterways, Ports and Shipping Sarbananda Sonowal and Managing Director of The Assam Tribune group Babita Rajkhowa.

Speaking on the occasion, Governor Shri Acharya expressed his delight for being part of the ceremony, describing it as “a symbol of excellence and a spirit of service”. He said, “The Assam Tribune family, through its R.G. Baruah Memorial Awards, honours individuals whose work and values inspire others to dream, to act, and to serve. Such personalities embody the true spirit of ‘seva’ that uplifts society and strengthens its moral fabric.”

The Governor highlighted the invaluable contributions of the awardees and lauded their dedication in their respective fields. “Each of these awardees stands as an inspiration for the younger generation from journalism and culture to sports and entrepreneurship. Their efforts reflect Assam’s vibrant spirit and enduring values,” he said.

Recalling the legacy of the late R.G. Baruah, founder of The Assam Tribune, Governor Shri Acharya described him as “a visionary who gave new direction to the intellectual and cultural life of Assam.”

The Governor praised The Assam Tribune for its credible journalism and contribution to society, stating that it has long served as “a mirror of public consciousness and a pillar of democracy.” He noted the newspaper’s historic role in promoting patriotism during India’s freedom struggle and its continuing efforts to advance education, culture, and social awareness.

Emphasizing the importance of responsible journalism, Shri Acharya said, “In this era of rapid information dissemination; truth, impartiality, and responsibility are more important than ever before. The media must focus not on sensationalism but on solutions, fostering harmony and unity in society.”

The Governor congratulated all recipients of awards and commended The Assam Tribune group for preserving the ideals of its founder for over eight decades. “May The Assam Tribune continue to serve as a beacon of knowledge, progress, and unity for Assam, the Northeast, and the nation,” he said.
