Governor attends 52nd Foundation Day celebration of Dr. B. Borooah Cancer Institute

Hails BBCI’s role in facilitating advanced cancer care treatment to the people of North East

Guwahati, Rongili Barta: Assam Governor Shri Lakshman Prasad Acharya attended the 52nd foundation day celebration of Dr. B. Borooah Cancer Institute (BBCI) in the city today, where he offered deep reverence to the visionary who was instrumental for this institute of repute.

Speaking on the occasion, Governor Shri Acharya paid heartfelt homage to the pioneer whose dedication gave rise to the Institute in 1973. He reflected on how the institute inspired by the humanitarian ideals of Dr. Bhubaneswar Borooah, has grown into a symbol of hope and healing for the entire Northeast. He acknowledged the efforts of the founding President Late Debendra Nath Sharma, founding Secretary Late Dr. Kanak Chandra Barooah, and several distinguished leaders and social workers who shaped its early journey.

The Governor noted that over the past five decades, BBCI has expanded like a banyan tree offering shelter, care, and strength to countless families. Today, it stands as one of the region’s foremost centres for advanced cancer treatment, research, and medical training. He lauded the dedication of doctors, nurses, technicians, and staff who have consistently upheld the institute’s mission with compassion and professionalism.

Reflecting on the institute’s legacy, he stated that its foundation is deeply rooted in Assam’s values of service, social welfare, and collective responsibility. Its integration into the National Cancer Grid has enabled strong collaborations with leading cancer institutions across the country, enhancing research, treatment standards, and knowledge-sharing.

He expressed satisfaction at the significant advancements Assam has made in cancer care in recent years, supported by strong governmental initiatives like formation of Assam Cancer Care Foundation and establishment of cancer care centres across the state. He expressed his gratitude to Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, whose commitment to healthcare has transformed cancer treatment facilities in Assam. He highlighted the establishment of multiple modern cancer hospitals across the state as a testimony to this dedication.

The Governor also appreciated the continuous support of the Assam Government in strengthening healthcare infrastructure, modernizing medical equipment, appointing skilled specialists, and promoting awareness and early detection through screening programmes.

 He noted that the combined efforts of the Central and State Governments, Tata Trusts, and the Institute’s medical community have built a strong foundation for cancer care in the Northeast.

He hoped that in the coming years  Dr. B. Borooah Cancer Institute will emerge as a leading centre of excellence in areas such as molecular biology, immunotherapy, and precision medicine.

In the ceremony, the Best Research Paper Publication award was conferred by the  Governor to Dr. Avdhesh Kumar Rai, Assistant Research Officer, BBCI and Dr. Karthik Chandra Bassetty Adhoc. Assistant Professor, Gynae Oncology BBCI.

The event was attended by Vice Chancellor of the National Law University and Judicial Academy, Assam Prof. (Dr.) K.V.S. Sarma; Director Dr. B. Borooah Cancer Institute, Dr. Vibhuti Bhushan Borthakur; Deputy Director (Administration & Projects) Dr. Ashok Kumar Das, Deputy Director(research) Dr. Moushumee Bhattacharya along with a host of other dignitaries.
