Governor attends 4th convocation of Assam Women’s University
Hails role of Assam Women’s University in academic empowerment of women
Guwahati,Rongili Barta: Assam Governor Shri Lakshman Prasad Acharya, attended the 4th Convocation Ceremony of Assam Women’s University today, recognizing and celebrating the achievements of its graduating students at Jorhat today. The 4th Convocation marked a significant milestone for Assam Women’s University, reinforcing its role in shaping the new generation women into empowered and socially conscious women leaders.
Addressing the graduates, Governor Shri Acharya lauded Assam Women’s University as the first institution of higher education in the region dedicated exclusively to women’s academic empowerment. Lauding the university, the Governor underscored the university’s commitment to advancing education, innovation, and social empowerment, and expressed hope that the university will continue to set new benchmarks in the years ahead.
Citing the rich legacy of women’s leadership from ancient times to the present, the Governor stated, “In our ancient culture, women have always held a revered place. From scholars like Gargi and Lopamudra to modern icons like Rani Lakshmibai and Savitribai Phule, Indian women have consistently led the way in creating lasting social impact.”
He expressed pride in the university’s initiative BHARTI (Building Holistic Advancement for Resilient and Ambitious Transformative Indian Women) – a women-centric development model aimed at fostering self-reliance and leadership among women across various domains, including education, health, environment, and economic empowerment. He noted that such initiatives align with the vision of Viksit Bharat as envisioned by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi.
The Governor also highlighted the significance of lifelong learning in the age of rapid technological change, encouraging students to embrace opportunities in emerging fields such as Artificial Intelligence, Data Science, and Green Technologies. Quoting former President Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, he remarked that if a woman is educated, the entire family can be educated. He further praised the increasing participation of women in higher education, referring to the All India Survey on Higher Education (2021–22), which reported that women now make up over 55 per cent of higher education enrollments, with female PhD researchers are breaking all previous records.
Governor Shri Acharya also commended the university’s alignment with the National Education Policy 2020, which emphasizes flexibility, multidisciplinary learning, and skill development as tools for national transformation and self-reliance. The Governor encouraged the graduates to view their degrees not just as academic credentials, but as a call to action – to serve society with empathy, integrity, and a sense of responsibility. He said “True development is measured by the impact we make on those most in need. Let your education become a force for positive changes in our society.”
It may be mentioned that the university conferred an honorary doctoral degree upon Mrs. Anita Chetia for her outstanding contributions to society 333 students received their degrees today.
Advisor to Higher Education, Government of Assam, Prof. Debabrata Das, Vice Chancellor of the University Prof. Ajanta Borgohain Rajkonwar, Former Professor of Gauhati University Prof. Anita Tamuli along with a host of other dignitaries were present on the occasion.
