Governor attends 11th Convocation of Assam Down Town University

Guwahati, Rongili Barta-  Assam Governor Shri Lakshman Prasad Acharya advocated the importance of skill based education as he said that the universities should turn themselves into a nerve-centre to stimulate and hone the intellectual and practical skills of the students and change them into job creators.

Addressing the 11th convocation of Assam down town university at its campus at Panikhaiti today, Governor Shri Acharya called upon the university to play the role of facilitators to skilling the students and make them job creators. He also said that in the present day situation when the demand for job markets is rapidly changing, Assam down town university should take the lead in  making its students intellectually, cognitively and physically skilled.  The Governor who is also the Visitor of the University said that the importance of skill-based education has increased and  the university’s role is not just to make students employable but to turn them into employers. He also asked the University to act responsibly so that technology can uplift mankind intellectually and morally not just materially.

Drawing the attention of the students, the Governor highlighted the pivotal role of education in fostering societal progress, and said, “As you embark upon your respective journeys, remember that knowledge is not merely a vehicle for personal advancement but a powerful means to uplift and transform your communities.” The Governor on this occasion referred to the leadership of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, whose visionary role has greatly contributed to the growth of the academic landscape of the nation. Stating the rich past of India, the Governor said that the National Education Policy NEP 2020 the first policy of the present century has the inherent potential to expedite the aspect of India and revive its lost vitality.

 

The Governor  also said, “Our Indian knowledge tradition has been spreading knowledge and skills for centuries. Great universities like Takshashila and Nalanda spread the glory of Indian education worldwide. The achievements of scholars like Panini, Kautilya, and Maharishi Charaka have attracted scholars from around the world”. Shri also expressed happiness to learn that the students from different states and countries are studying at this university, which reflects not only the diversity of the university but also the cultural richness and educational strength of the region.

The Governor on the occasion advised the passing out students to work for the society and the people who have contributed towards their achievement. He also asked them to work for the development of the needy and contribute to building a better society and nation. Minister of Tourism Jayanta Mallabaruah speaking on the occasion asked the graduates to utilize their skills for the betterment of the state. It may be noted that  D.litt was conferred on Prof. Achyuta Samanta, founder Chancellor of KIIT and KISS. A total of 1610 students received degrees of which 1202 have received undergraduate degrees, 382 have received postgraduate degrees, and 26 have been awarded with PhDs.
