Dibrugarh Citizens Forum Remembers Pandit Prabar Krishnakanta Handique
M. Hashim Ali, Dibrugarh, Rongili Barta- The Dibrugarh Citizens Forum commemorated Pandit Prabar Krishnakanta Handique on his birth anniversary with reverence on July 20. The homage was paid by offering garlands and lighting lamps in front of his full-size statue situated in the Dibrugarh University premises. The event, organized by the forum’s joint secretary Diganta Phukan, began with the lighting of lamps, followed by a brief speech by the forum’s president, Dr. Bharati Dutta, highlighting Handique’s educational, academic, and literary contributions. She also mentioned the contributions of his father, Radhakanta Handique, to society.  Krishnakanta Handique, who served as the Vice-Chancellor of Gauhati University for nine years starting in 1948, brought glory to Assam by being awarded the prestigious Padma Vibhushan, one of India’s highest civilian honors. Dr. Chandan Sharma, a professor in the Department of History at Dibrugarh University, emphasized the importance of the younger generation knowing about this great individual. He suggested celebrating Handique’s birth anniversary on a convenient open day if it falls during the summer vacation. The event was attended by the forum’s secretary Durlabh Gogoi, Ahom Sabha president Shashank Neog, Tai Cultural Center president Hemakanta Dihingia, forum advisor Deepak Changmai, former professor of Dibrugarh University Dr. Kamaleshwar Dutta, notable dignitaries, and over fifty research students from the Assamese department.
