Assam Governor attends the centenary celebrations of Assam Textile Institute

Asks Assam Textile Institute to use innovative technologies to cater to changing needs of customers for textile

Guwahati, Rongili Barta- Assam Governor Prof. Jagdish Mukhi said that the journey of Assam Textile Institute for the last 100 years is one of pride and prestige, which it earned by virtue of its sheer diligence and dedication. Speaking at the centenary celebrations of Assam Textile Institute at Ambari here today, the Governor said that though in the last 100 years, Assam Textile Institute created a dedicated workforce for textile in the state, on the occasion of centenary celebrations, the should take a pledge to empower itself to use cutting-edge technologies to make its curriculum more encompassing and competitive. The Governor also said that there are very few institutions that survive 100 years. The Assam Textile Institute is one such institution that can proudly claim the honour of showcasing its unflinching commitment to sustaining the weaving traditions of Assam. Hailing the efforts and initiatives of the institute, the Governor said that for the last 100 years, the Assam Textile Institute has been at the forefront of imparting academic discourses to thousands of students not only in Assam but across the country. He expressed happiness that this institute has created a unique brand of exquisite human resources who are lending their hands in creating high quality  products and designs. It is heartening that the resourceful students that this institute has nurtured during its journey are placed all over the country and outside. The Governor also said that in 2030, India will have 140 million people who will be attaining the college age thereby making it one of the world’s youngest nations. As a result of the changing circumstances, the Assam Textile Institute must reorient itself to become a hub for utilising the creativity and innovation of the youth through the use of cutting-edge technologies. He also expressed that, under Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi’s stewardship, the country is committed in its demeanour to achieving excellence. The Prime Minister has been unequivocal in using technology and talents as the two pillars for the country’s development. Under him, the country is extensively using IT as an agent of inclusive development. The Governor also said that Assam Textile Institute is unquestionably important to the development of the textile industry throughout the North East. It is really heartening to note that over the last 100 years, it has been trying to promote and strengthen the position of the textile education system in Assam. The Institute, ever since its inception, has been imparting technical knowledge in textiles and has been able to place its students in the handloom sector, power loom-based industry, petrochemical industry, export houses, material testing industry, fibre division, yarn division, garment manufacturing units, fashion house, international textile sectors, etc. He also said that, following the footsteps of the Center’s Make in India drive, many states have started promoting their traditional and indigenous textiles on national and international platforms. In this context, he urged the larger fraternity of the Assam Textile Institute to come up with new innovations and promote the traditional attire on the national and international stage. He asked the institute for taking steps for developing the state-owned brands.  Speaking about the newly attained GI-Tag by Assamese Gamocha, which is the cultural identity of every Assamese, the Governor observed that everyone should work diligently to bring forth the fabrics of Assam, i.e., Muga, Eri, and Paat silk, to the national limelight with the help of innovative technology. As the country is gearing up for celebrating Azadi ka Amrit Kal under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Governor expressed that, in the period of Amrit Kaal, the students, who are better referred to as Amrit Santans, should take the lead in making a New India by the year 2047. The Assam Textile Institute should also come up with its innovative solutions to catch the fancy of the consumers and become a reputed name in the academic and professional spheres of the country. Member of Parliament, Pabitra Margherita, Principal of the Institute, Ram Chandra Das, teachers, students and a host of dignitaries were present at the event.
