A New Era for North East India – State of Art Mortuary Innagurated at Assam Medical College Hospital, Dibrugarh::Yearly 1800-2000 Post mortem at AMCH

M Hashim Ali,Dibrugarh,Rongili Barta- In an auspicious moment in the history of Assam Medical College and Hospital, Dibrugarh, the most awaited two storeyed new mortuary complex with all modern amenities was inaugurated on the 17th of September, 2024 by the Principal of Assam Medical College and Hospital, Dr. Sanjeeb Kakati in the presence of Head of Department of Forensic Medicine and Toxicology, Dr. Renuka Rongpharpi and is now opened for public service of the region. It is worth mentioning that an estimate of Rs 4,47,00,000 (four crore, forty seven lakh) 0nly under Assam Medical College and Hospital-vision-5 package was sanctioned for the construction of the complex.In presence of Superintendent of Assam Medical College and Hospital, Dr. Prasanta Dihingia along with the faculty members of the Department of Forensic Medicine and Toxicology, namely Dr. Nabajit Barman, Dr. Raihan Uddin Ahmed, Dr. Nivedita Shyam, Dr. Nandini Pegu, Vice principal Dr.Reema Bhuyan,Head of Department as well as other professors of the Department of Anatomy and Pathology, etc. were present to grace the occasion. Dr.Anuradha Chutia ,Dr.Giriraj Kushrey and Dr.Pranita Medhi were also present there at the historic moment. It is worth mentioning that 1800-2000 post mortem examinations are done in AMCH every year. Additionally, examination of sexual assault victims and accussed, age estimation of adolescents sent by Juvenile justice court as well as of students sent by Sports Association of India(SAI) are all done free of cost. It is worth mentioning that the initial steps in DNA sample collection for all bodily samples will be performed with all modern facilities and methodologies in this new mortuary complex. Moreover, facilities for X-ray examination, cadaveric preservation and post mortem videography will also be available in the complex. Classrooms, forensic laboratory and practical halls are present in the first floor of the complex. Proper waiting rooms and well equipped lavatories for relatives accompanying the deceased as well as for police personnel are also made available in the complex as intimated to the media by Dr. Raihan Uddin Ahmed, Assistant professor of Department of Forensic Medicine and Toxicology to the press.
