Governor calls for collective resolve to build a Drug-Free Assam; urges youth to lead the movement
Guwahati,Rongili Barta: Assam Governor Shri Lakshman Prasad Acharya today called upon the youth to become active ambassadors of a drug-free society, underscoring that awareness, discipline, family support are essential to protect the future of the younger generation. The Governor was attending the Nasha Mukt Bharat Sankalp Abhiyan organised under the initiative of Lok Bhavan, Assam, at Gauhati University.

Addressing the students, and other participants, Governor Shri Acharya said that the fight against drug abuse was not only about abstaining from intoxicating substances but about embracing a healthy lifestyle, inculcating sound moral character, safeguarding families and building a responsible society. He stressed that the true strength of a nation lies in the health of its citizens, the character of its youth and the well-being of its families.

Drawing inspiration from the Sanskrit verse “Vidya Dadati Vinayam”, the Governor observed that the true purpose of education extends beyond the acquisition of knowledge to the cultivation of humility, wisdom, self-discipline and noble conduct. He said that when knowledge is complemented by values and personal success by social responsibility, it lays the foundation for a stronger society and a capable nation.

Appreciating the officers and personnel of Assam Rifles for their contribution to the campaign, the Governor said that the force’s distinguished tradition of courage, discipline and service to the nation offered valuable lessons for society. Just as protecting the nation’s borders requires determination and vigilance, combating the menace of drugs demands collective awareness, self-control and sustained public participation.

The Governor particularly urged students, research scholars and NCC and NSS cadets to carry the message of a drug-free society beyond the university campus to their hostels, educational institutions, villages and neighbourhoods. Describing young people as powerful agents of social change, he said their words, conduct and individual efforts could inspire their peers and help prevent vulnerable young people from falling into the trap of substance abuse. He called upon every student to embrace the campaign as a personal commitment and help spread awareness across Assam.

Highlighting the role of family and educational institutions, the Governor stressed that meaningful social transformation begins at home. He underscored the importance of open communication between parents and children, sensitivity towards young people’s concerns and the role of teachers in nurturing confidence, discipline and positive thinking. He observed that providing young people with a clear purpose, meaningful opportunities and positive company was essential to channel their energy towards constructive pursuits.

Referring to the vision of Viksit Bharat under the guidance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Governor said that the nation’s development depended significantly on a healthy, educated, skilled and responsible younger generation. He noted that the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan was closely aligned with this vision, as it sought to foster awareness and encourage citizens to take responsibility for their own lives, their families and society.

The Governor also recalled the Nasha Mukt Bharat Sankalp Padyatra undertaken across various districts of Assam from September 17 to October 2 to spread awareness about the harmful effects of drug abuse. Appreciating the enthusiastic participation of young people and other sections of society, he said the initiative had reinforced the conviction that collective commitment could bring meaningful social transformation.

Calling for a united effort to build an Assam where young people could realise their aspirations and families could live in an atmosphere of health, happiness and trust, the Governor urged all stakeholders to sustain the momentum of the campaign. He expressed confidence that continued cooperation among educational institutions, security forces, social organisations, families and responsible citizens would help create a healthier and more conscious society.

The programme was attended by Vice-Chancellor of Gauhati University, Prof. Nani Gopal Mahanta; Commander, 21 Sector, Assam Rifles, Brigadier Nishant Chandel; Registrar of Gauhati University,
Prof. Utpal Sharma; Commandant, 41 Assam Rifles, Vicky Lamoria; senior officers of Assam Rifles, faculty members, students and other dignitaries.
