Assam Governor reviews implementation of NEP 2020 in the educational institutions in Upper Assam

Guwahati,Rongili Barta: Assam Governor Shri Lakshman Prasad Acharya today attended a review meeting on the implementation of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 in the affiliated colleges to the Universities of Upper Assam in Dibrugarh University. He also chaired an interactive session with the officials of secondary education to take stock of the implementation of NEP 2020 in the schools.

During the meeting, the Governor took stock of the implementation of the NEP as he took feedback from the Vice Chancellors and Principals, senior government officials, and eminent educationists on the structural and academic reforms being undertaken in the institutions of higher education and schools across Upper Assam. The discussions focused on strengthening academic quality, institutional reforms, and effective implementation of policy objectives.

The Governor underscored that the active cooperation and commitment of educational institutions are vital to realizing the vision of NEP 2020. He emphasised on the student-centric approaches being under taken by institutions. The Governor during the meeting provided a renewed vision, clear direction, and long-term objective to the state’s education system to become model in the implementation of the NEP.

In a separate interaction, Director Secondary Education, Smt. Mamata Hojai, presented a detailed report highlighting the progress and initiatives undertaken under NEP 2020 by the department. She emphasized the NEP’s focus on skill-oriented education, promotion of gender equality, and enhancement of quality standards in secondary education. She also highlighted initiatives taken by schools in generating skills on basic healthcare. She informed the Governor that the students are being trained in healthcare skills such as basics of nursing assistance, CPR, and first aid. She also apprised him of a skill carnival organised in Kamrup Metro, where students conducted elementary health check-ups for ministers and dignitaries.

During the interaction, the Governor stressed the importance of motivating students to join the National Cadet Corps and enquired about the observance of International Yoga Day in schools. He further suggested that Parent-Teacher Meetings should be encouraged regularly and that annual programmes be held every year to provide students with opportunities to showcase their talents and appraise parents and guardians about the performance of the school.

 

Emphasizing the role of teachers, the Governor urged educators to be compassionate and to create a supportive environment where students feel comfortable discussing their problems. In this context, he suggested allocating a dedicated 30-minute daily slot for student-teacher interaction in schools.

 

Advisor to Lok Bhavan Secretariat, Dr. Harbansh Dixit, asked the officials to submit proposals to Lok Bhavan seeking support for extending NCC facilities to students in remote and far-flung areas. He also highlighted the need to strengthen sanitation and hygiene in schools, referring to a Supreme Court ruling mandating the provision of sanitary pads in schools under the supervision of a lady teacher.

Governor emphasized the necessity of inculcating a strong sense of nationalism among young minds. Noting that the nation is commemorating 150 years of Vande Mataram, he suggested that educational institutions consider organising competitions on the singing of Vande Mataram among student groups to foster patriotism and national pride.

The meeting also featured an interactive question-and-answer session, during which several key aspects of education were thoughtfully deliberated. The exchange fostered meaningful dialogue on issues extending well beyond the commonly cited challenges of financial constraints and faculty shortages.
