Exceptionally heavy rainfall affected the State today
Guwahati,Rongili Barta: Exceptionally heavy rainfall severely affected the districts of western and southern part of the State today with extremely heavy rainfall (≥30 cm to ≥20 cm) due to deep depression over Northwest Bay of Bengal.
An advisory from Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), Govt. of India today informed that, the deep depression over Northwest Bay of Bengal off West Bengal-Bangladesh coasts moved nearly northwards with a speed of 22 kmph in yesterday and crossed West Bengal Bangladesh coasts which lay centred at 1130 hrs IST of today over West Bengal-Bangladesh coasts maintaining its intensity of deep depression till evening of May 31, 2025 in the northeastern states. MHA, in this regard, published warning of exceptionally heavy rainfall over Meghalaya and extremely heavy rainfall along with wind speed reaching 50-60 kmph gusting to 70 kmph over Assam and nearby states in next 24 hours which may aggravate water logging, slow vehicular movement, and increase the risk of localized landslides in vulnerable pockets. The state and district authorities are closely monitoring the situation and emergency response systems are being kept on alert.
In view of the current situation, Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma, Hon’ble Chief Minister, Assam while briefing the media persons announced the following measures for ensuring safety of the people :
- i) Special casual leave allowed to all the govt. employees of Kamrup and Kamrup Metro districts on May 31, 2025.
- ii) All the government schools of Kamrup and Kamrup Metro districts to remain closed on May 31, 2025 as private schools usually remain closed on Saturdays. iii) Private establishmentsare also requested to allow their employees coming from far way places to stay at home on May 31, 2025.
- iv) All people to take following precautions and remain vigilant:
- To stay indoors, avoid open areas and trees, and disconnect electrical devices during lightning if occurs.
- Avoiding unnecessary movement during periods of intense rainfall. c. Residents in low-lying and hillside areas should stay alert for any signs of flooding or landslides.
- The public is also urged to stay tuned to official weather updates and follow advisories issued by local authorities to ensure safety during this prolonged spell of rain. The status of the situation would be updated by ASDMA from time to time for general awareness.
ASDMA has issued few safety measures to follow during the flash flood which have been enclosed with this release for wide publicity.

Dos:
- Use sand bags/pillows/rug to fill the empty space in front of door to prevent rising water enter in your house.
- Keep important items like electronic equipment, food and drinking water at higher place.
- Keep the storage of emergency items like water, dry food, flashlights, and first-aid kits nearby.
- Keep an emergency kit (dry food, torch, water bottle, whistle, valuable documents etc.) ready with you in water proof packet.
- Know your emergency exit routes and nearby safe shelters, and follow instructions from authorities.
- Get updated on weather forecasts, local news, and warnings from disaster management authorities.
Don’ts:
- Avoid driving, walking or visiting the inundated areas and places with sudden flooding.
- Children are most vulnerable during flash floods. Do not allow your kids to play or walk in and around inundated areas.
- Don’t go near drains/man-hole etc. during flood.
- Do not touch or go near any submerged transformers/inverters/electric poles/live wires. Be careful around electrical poles and broken wires.
- Don’t spread fake information which may create panic situation among people.
- Don’t throw garbage/plastic in the drains to prevent water logging in the drains.
