Assam Governor confers degrees on first convocation of Madhabdev University
Calls upon the degree holders to empower themselves to address societal problems and challenges
Madhabdev University is disseminating knowledge and fostering morality and social responsibility: Governor
Guwahati,Rongili Barta- Assam Governor Shri Lakshman Acharya said that Madhabdev University established on the sacred land of Narayanpur and inspired by the cultural heritage of Assam is not just limited to the dissemination of knowledge but dedicated to fostering morality, a sense of service, and social responsibility among students.
Addressing the graduates on the first convocation of Madhabdev University at Narayanpur today, Shri Acharya said that the purpose of education is not to secure employment but develop a person’s character, ethics and sense of responsibility towards society.
Keeping this in mind, Madhabdev University has incorporated the Indian knowledge tradition as an integral part of its curriculum. Congratulating the graduates on receiving the degrees, the Governor offered his profound respect and obeisance to Madhabdev and his revered Guru Srimanta Sankardev on the occasion. Shri Acharya also hailed the policy of the university in incorporating Yoga, NSS, NCC, Rover, and Ranger as value-based compulsory courses, as he said that the initiative will not only enrich the students academically but also strengthens them physically, mentally, and spiritually.
The Governor addressing the graduates said, “Convocation marks a significant milestone in every student’s lives. It does not merely signify the formal completion of your education but also marks the beginning of the real test of your knowledge and skills. The true value of your education will not be judged by your examination scores but by your contributions to society, the nation, and humanity”. He said, “As you step out of this university today, remember that education is not just a means to acquire a degree; it is also the foundation of your responsibility toward society. You are the bearers of the traditions, ideals, and teachings of this university”.
Referring to Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, who envisioned India as a global knowledge superpower, the Governor said that the Prime Minister’s vision of investing in people is based on three pillars—education, skills, and health. He said that in alignment with his vision, the government has introduced the National Education Policy, reforming the old system to make education more relevant and effective.
The Governor said that NEP 2020 encourages a robust education system based on India’s rich knowledge tradition and delivering high-quality education, and positioning India as a global powerhouse. He called upon the students who received their degrees to make the best use of the knowledge, skills, and experience gained at Madhavdev University and address various societal problems and challenges.
Shri Acharya said that universities play a crucial role in the nation-building process. They are responsible for the dissemination of knowledge, skill enhancement, and the promotion of research, which together contribute to the holistic development of the nation. Showering his words of praise on Madhabdev University, the Governor said that he is delighted that within a short period, the university has established a strong identity in the field of education and research. It may be noted that at present, the university offers 15 undergraduate programs, 13 postgraduate programs, and Ph.D. programs in 11 departments, with a total enrollment of 2,760 students.
Stating a unique feature of Madhavdev University, the Governor said that the fact that all undergraduate students are required to study “Madhavdev” as a mandatory subject is a commendable initiative that helps the students acquaint with the teachings of the great Vaishnav saint of Assam, thereby fostering their awareness of morality and humanity.
