Efficacy of education to produce job ready graduates with ethical values determine future of a nation: Governor

Guwahati, December 17: Assam Governor Prof. Jagdish Mukhi said, “Education is the central pillar of a nation’s growth. Its quality and penetration, its efficacy in terms of producing job-ready graduates with strong ethical values and patriotism determine the future of a nation”.

Addressing the Chancellors and Vice Chancellors (VCs) during the conference of VCs of six private universities of the state at Raj Bhavan here today, Governor Prof. Mukhi said that education always plays a vital role in nation building and training the youth for the future development of the country. He, therefore, said that universities should play decisive role in churning the students to play the role of catalyst for growth of the country.

The Governor exhorted on the need of holistic approach on the part of VC and other stake holders for overall development of higher education. He at the same time reiterated on the requirement of responsive system as he said that educational objectives may not be achieved if the system is not made effective for sustainable development.

The Governor also said that development of higher education sans New Education Policy (NEP) 2020 is not possible. Referring to NEP 2020 which puts emphasis on practical learning for every student, Prof. Mukhi advocated for hands on experimental, analytical and practical learning for all the students. He also said that close to the mandate of the NEP 2020, efforts should be made to promote traditional Indian knowledge based on scientific temper. This should be done to create new job avenues in the country, the Governor added. He also referred to newly introduced system called IMPRINT (impacting research innovation and technology) and asked the VCs to use it in order to translate the bookish knowledge into a  technology driven knowledge.

Prof. Mukhi also said that the institutions of higher learning should think of implementing dual degree programmes for the benefit of future generations. He, therefore, requested the VCs to start brain storming sessions to discuss the NEP-2020 and prepare a broad roadmap for implementing the provisions of the NEP in their respective universities.

Referring to the variety of notions in the minds of some people with regard to the functions and standards of private universities vis-a-vis government universities, the Governor urged upon the VCs of private universities to set higher standards to transform their respective universities into centre of excellence. He also requested them to use their universities to curve a niche in cutting-edge research and high-quality teaching so as to enable Assam to secure one of the top performing states in the delivery of quality higher education and research in the country.

The Governor congratulated Assam Don Bosco University and USTM University on bagging ‘A’ NAAC accreditation and  said that he expects similar dedication from other private universities as well.

Advisor of Chancellors’s Secretariat Prof. Mihir Kanti Choudhury  also spoke on the occasion.
